Why Buy From Light As Air Boats

The Champlain is designed for big lakes, heavy loads, and long-distance wilderness travel. Its 18-foot hull offers excellent speed and glide, while the wide, stable design helps it handle waves and gear with confidence. It’s especially popular for expedition trips, family paddling, and paddlers carrying large amounts of equipment.

All Wenonah Canoes are handcrafted in their manufacturing facility on the banks of the Mississippi River in Southeast Minnesota. Each of their craftsmen pour dozens of hours of labor and decades of experience into each boat they deliver to their customers across the globe.

Consider the Champlain if your adventures will take you to big lakes and open water or if you need an efficient canoe that will handle a mountain of gear. This canoe will haul two adults, a week's worth of equipment and an arsenal of fishing gear, and still have plenty of buoyancy to ride high and dry in wind and waves. It is one of Wenonah's largest tandems--a larger, more stable version of their versatile Spirit II.Ā

Champlain's length and efficient design give it good glide and speed, while Its slightly rockered keel-line makes it surprisingly nimble. The Champlain is massively stable and serves up predictable performance in challenging conditions. It's stability and size make it a great choice for larger paddlers.

Big water, big loads, big dreams. The Champlain can handle them all.

    Features

Wenonah's Tuf-weaveĀ® material is an interwoven fabric made of 50% polyester and 50% fiberglass that out performs either material alone. The Tuf-weaveĀ® layup results in our most durable composite canoes. Tuf-weaveĀ® canoes offer improved impact resistance and are a great compromise between light weight, performance, and price.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Flex-Core construction?
Flex-Core construction uses Wenonah’s Tuf-weaveĀ® composite, a blend of fiberglass and polyester laminated around a foam core. This layup is designed to provide strong impact resistance and durability while remaining lighter than many traditional recreational canoe materials.

How much does the Champlain Flex-Core weigh?
The Flex-Core version typically weighs about 61 pounds, offering a strong balance between durability and manageable weight for transport and portaging.

Is the Champlain stable for beginners?
Yes. The Champlain’s wide hull and shallow-arched design provide excellent stability and predictable handling, making it comfortable for beginners while still performing well for experienced paddlers.

What type of water is the Champlain best suited for?
The canoe performs best on large lakes, open water, and wilderness routes, where its length and volume help it maintain speed and stability in waves and windy conditions.

How much gear can it carry?
The Champlain has a very high load capacity and can comfortably carry two large paddlers plus a week’s worth of camping gear, while still maintaining strong buoyancy and performance.

    How maneuverable is the Champlain?
Despite its length, the canoe includes about 1.5 inches of rocker, allowing it to turn surprisingly well while still tracking efficiently across open water.Ā

Is the Champlain good for canoe camping?
Yes. Its large interior volume and high carrying capacity make it ideal for extended wilderness trips and expedition paddling.

Who is the Champlain best suited for?
The Champlain is particularly well suited for larger paddlers, families, or anyone carrying heavy loads on big water, where stability and capacity are essential.
